Sutton Coldfield Speakers Club Competition 23rd January 2009

The Club Competition, held at Sutton Coldfield Speakers Club on 23rd January 2009, saw trophy winners, Di Mitchell and Molly Cooper proceed to the West Midlands Area Competition, to be held at Sutton Club, on February 19th 2009.

The winning main speech delivered by Club President, Di Mitchell, was entitled ‘love me, hate me’ and took a rye look at our love-hate relationship with mobile phones. Di got the audience laughing with her humorous observations of those loud ‘I’m on the train’ moments along with images of old, over-sized, ‘Dom Jolly’ phones. Successful winner of the impromptu topics session, Molly Cooper, spoke inspirationally for 3-4 minutes on the theme of ‘New Beginnings’.

Chair for the evening, Simon Cooper, began with a swift reminder of the competition rules which included the need for participants to be fully paid up members within the Association of Speakers Club’s (ASC). Humorously, Simon then pondered on whether he indeed needed to pay his subs! Three club members took part in the main speech competition. The first entitled, “Me and my brother” was prepared by Club member, Hassan Kahn, who shared his most annoying, funny and naughty moments with his brother. The second, prepared by Club member, Molly Cooper, took the form of an analysis of the classic novel, ‘Lucky Jim’ by Kingsley Amis, about an ailing young lecturer and natural rebel who makes up disrespectful songs about his annoying professor. The evening was evaluated by Guest Judge, Yvonne Leggett who commented on the high quality of all speeches, but of the need to avoid personal narratives for competition speeches.

All winners will compete at the West Midlands Area Competition, which will take place at Sutton Coldfield Speakers Club at 8pm on Thursday 19
th February 2009, at Aston Wood Golf Club. The meeting will be chaired by Vice President, Amo Singh and will include special guest, Lillian Watts, as Chief Judge for the evening. Guests and members of the public are very welcome to attend and are not required to speak. Cost £2.50.

Sutton Coldfield Speakers Club Report 15.1.09

Sutton Coldfield Speakers Club kicked off the new Spring 2009 session on 15th January, with speeches on the theme of ‘celebration’.

On an extremely sad note, Club President and Chair for the evening, Di Mitchell broke the upsetting news about much loved and respected fellow club member, John Rimmer, who sadly lost his brave battle with cancer on 23
rd December 2008. A celebrated speaker, John had a penchant for nurturing newer members. Di Mitchell gave a heartfelt tribute, before a 2 minute silence, in honour of John’s life and commitment.

The Club meeting began with 3 main speeches of 7-8 minutes in length. The first delivered by David Dugmore, looked humorously at the irony of Christmas and New Year celebrations which can turn sour. Evaluating the speech, Simon Cooper, complimented David on successfully combining readings from a newspaper, poem and book. The second speech, entitled 1+1=2 was delivered by new club member, Ted Redford, who reminisced about the famous double act, Morecambe and Wise. Alyson Nicholds, evaluating, offered praise to Ted for delivering a confident maiden speech and successfully engaging with the audience. The 3
rd speech by Vice President Amo Singh, was an educational speech for club members, based on tips about ‘speech construction’.

The Topics session, chaired by David Bentley involved selecting from a choice of ‘props’ and talking on an impromptu basis for 3 minutes. Several club members delivered entertaining short speeches, including new member, Hassan Khan, aged only 15 years, who talked imaginatively about getting a new pen for Christmas. The Best Topic speech was awarded to new club member, Shahana Kahn for her humorous speech about a selling a light bulb!

The next meeting on Thursday February 12
th 2009 will take place, as usual at Aston Wood Golf Club. The meeting will be chaired by Molly Cooper and will be on the theme of ‘high acheivement’. Guests and members of the public are very welcome to attend, free of charge and are not required to speak. Sutton Coldfield Speakers Club meets at 8pm, every 2nd and 4th Thursday in the month at Aston Wood Golf Club, Blake Street. The nearest train station is Blake Street. Smart casual dress required.
