At the club Speech Competition held on Thursday 24th January 2008 the chairman for the evening was John Rimmer. He conducted both the Main Speech Competition and the Topics Competition. The competition was judged by Graham Kaye, a well-regarded teacher of public speaking.
There were four participants for the main competition with the subjects “The Torture Chamber”, “The Painted Lady”, “It’s Time to Travel” and “Cluck Cluck”. The winner of the silver cup was Club President, Di Mitchell, who presented “The painted Lady”. This was a speech relating to the origins and use of make up by the female sex. The runner up was Pamela Brown with a speech titled “Cluck Cluck”, a moving account of the cruelty and ill treatment of poultry in battery farming.
Seven club members took part in the topics competition. After drawing for the order of speaking, all the participants were asked to leave to room. They were then called in one at a time in order and were asked to speak for three minutes on the subject “When going gets tough the tough……”, a subject provided by the judge. Each had the time taken to walk from the door to the lectern to formulate their speech and all the participants found it a rather difficult subject on which to speak without preparation. The winner of the silver cup for topics was again judged to be Di Mitchell for her topic on the toughness of trade union bargaining with employers. The runner up was Alyson Nicholls for a topic on the frustrations of her recent skiing holiday in Italy where there was heavy snowfall that prevented skiing for three of the days she was there.
At the end, the judge gave an appraisal of the evening and presented the prizes. Di Mitchell will represent the club at the Area Competition of the National Association of Speakers Clubs to be held on 15th February at the Talbot Hotel, Stourbridge.
The next club meeting will be on Thursday 14th February at 8.00 pm at Aston Wood Golf Club when the Chairman will be Pamela Brown and the theme will be “Romance”. Visitors are welcome; for further information contact Di Mitchell telephone 0121 354 3281 or Mike Cooper telephone 0121 355 2509
